The Shroud is a dense layer of mist that covers the surface of the planet, leaving only scattered mountain peaks to ascend above it like islands in a sea of fog. It is accepted wisdom that nothing that falls or travels below the Shroud ever returns, and sensible persons do not make the attempt. Whether the mist itself is deadly, or the Shroud merely conceals other dangers, any number of conflicting legends can be heard to tell. The Dragon-Gods do nothing to discourage these legends, and may act to dissuade any notions that there might be a good reason to penetrate the mists. At any rate, such notions are rare. The average citizen doesn’t have much reason to think about the Shroud, any more than you or I think often about the ground or the air we breathe. To most, it is simply a fact of life.
